In hydroponics, we don't use soil because it can react with hydroponic nutrients, causing pH and EC instability. Commonly, we use expanded clay balls, coco, perlite, or vermiculite. For plants with large rooting systems, we still require something that the plants hold onto that won't react with the nutrients.
